Behavioral Health Supports for Justice-Involved Individuals

Overview

Behavioral Health Supports for Justice-Involved Individuals (BH-JI) is a partnership between the Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services and the Executive Office of the Massachusetts Trial Court.

BH-JI helps people who are “justice-involved” connect with behavioral health services and social supports in the community. This includes:

  • people leaving jail or prison within six months,
  • people who have recently left jail or prison within a year,
  • people on parole, and
  • people on probation.

Mission

 The mission of the BH-JI is to: 

  1. Help justice-involved people with their mental health and substance use needs
  2. Improve health, reduce deadly drug overdoses, and support successful healthcare use for people enrolled in the program
  3. Connect people with the right healthcare and community services for them

Eligibility

In general, a person is eligible for BH-JI if they: 

  • Have substance use and/or mental health needs
  • Need help meeting their health and social needs;
  • Are involved with the criminal-legal system in the following ways:
    • are being released from jail or prison within six months, 
    • were recently released from jail or prison within a year
    • or are on probation or parole
  • Are eligible for MassHealth.
